Soul Midwife

A brief description of a Soul Midwife's role in end-of-life preparation and celebration.

What do soul midwives do?

Soul midwifery is a unique approach to end-of-life care. Soul Midwives compassionately assist and accompany a dying person during their palliative care, and can provide their services within a home, hospital or hospice. They are a "friend" to the dying, helping them leave their physical body without fear.

"Just as a birth midwife ensures a safe delivery into this world, the soul midwife's role is to do the same for the dying, to make a good death possible, a dignified, peaceful and even enriching experience"

Felicity Warner

A soul midwife provides:

  • Holistic and spiritual end of life support
  • TLC in hospitals, care homes or at home
  • A range of gentle therapies to soothe and reassure your loved one
A soul midwife offers compassionate friendship to the dying to assist them to experience a dignified and peaceful end of life transition

Soul Midwives offer non-denominational pastoral support with love and dignity to those who are approaching the end of their lives. Their work can begin from the point of diagnosis and continue to the final day of life supporting and encouraging to help those facing end of life experience a tender, peaceful and concious passing.

As well as offering spiritual guidance, a soul midwife can also help with the practical aspects of dying, helping the dying person to come up with a plan for leaving the world as a midwife might help an expectant mother come up with a birth plan.

A loving vigil

Crystalline celebrations offer dignified and compassionate companionship.

Chrissie Lloyd, Soul Midwife

Chrissie Lloyd is a fully trained Soul Midwife (Levels 1 & 2), and can work with you or your loved one before as well after death. She works as a non-medical holistic companion to guide and support a dying person to facilitate a gentle and tranquil death.

During a vigil, Chrissie will ensure that your loved one's individual needs are respected and ensure that they feel loved and supported whether they find themselves in hospital, in a hospice, or at home. Although non-denomonational, Chrissie practices multi-faith soul midwifery to honour the dying's personal beliefs on life, death and the afterlife - whether religious, spiritual, agnostic or atheist. She will provide gentle therapeutic techniques to create a sacred and healing space using sound, touch, colour or scented oils to help relieve pain and anxiety, and work holistically with the spirit and soul at all stages of the transition. As a soul midwife will also support family and friends with loving care and a human touch to provide comfort and reassurance.
